Four villages, four moods

Skala is the most visitor-facing settlement, with the main sandy beach, seaside restaurants, accommodation and the landmark church of Agioi Anargyroi. Megalochori, also shown as Milos or Myli on ferry timetables, is the capital and a quieter port village, with lanes, local life and access to the north coast. Limenaria, in the south, feels more traditional and removed from the busier ferry side of the island. Metochi sits higher between Skala and Megalochori and is best known for views, sunset atmosphere and a calmer village character.

Which village to start with

If you’re short on time, base yourself in Skala or Megalochori and treat Limenaria and Metochi as excursions rather than overnight stops. Both are close enough to visit on foot, by bicycle or by taxi from either port village, so you don’t need to choose a base perfectly on your first visit — the island is small enough to see all four without much lost time.

• First visit or travelling with children: base in Skala.
• Want a quieter, more local base: choose Megalochori.
• Have a car or bicycle and want seclusion: consider Limenaria for a night.
• Short on time: visit Metochi as an afternoon or sunset walk, not an overnight stay.
